The Fishing Classroom
Is that any problem you faced in fishing? Let me, Adam help you to solve your problems. Are you ready?
We are going to start our class now.
At Kelong, you will not hold hegemony even though you have a set of perfect fishing tools. Kelong is
worthy of the name of UNJANG fish area. Nibong woods (pinang woods) in the water is the best place
to a lot of microorganisms and shells to live. Little fish are attracted to come over for food. Some other
bigger fish will come over here for food too as little fish is their food. Therefore, it becomes a food chain.
You have to understand about the favorites of a fish so that you will get a satisfied result in fishing.
Knowledge about morning tide and evening tide is very important. When there was tide time, little fish
will gather at the water flow area. So, the bigger fish will come over for food. Let's talk about tide time
at Kelong. There are big tide day and small tide day. In Lunar calendar day 1 to day 6 and day 15 to
day 22, south-north flow refers to big tide day. Lunar calendar day 7 to day 14 and day 23 to day 29, it
is north flow which refers to small tide day. Most of the fishing fans misunderstood that water flow is rapid
on big tide day. Anyway, it is uncertain. Big tide day means the water is raising a bit high than small tide
day. Rapid water flow depends on the time ofthe tide. That is why sometimes, water flows rapidly in the
morning but slow at night. This is because tide will late for one hour to swell or ebb everyday. Tell you a
secret. When there is a rapid flow at night, you can try to fish at the part that follow the current. Fishes will
not swim against the current for food. There is another condition. When the water is clear, you have to use
a very fine fish line to cut down fishes' alert about the fish line. Every November until the end of December
is the time for East-North monsoon season. There are strong wind and billow which hindering fishing fans
to go out to the sea for fishing. However, you do not need to worry. You can come to my house. There is a
perfect place for fishing. Kelong is a fishing practical centre. There are various kinds of fishes here. If you
do not have any knowledge about them, it will be a trouble for you to get fish.
There are some pictures below. Hope that it can help you.
Green Wrasse/ Spotted Grouper / Leopard coralgrouper
These three kinds of fishes live under Kelong. It is not an easy job to fish them. You will need quite a lot
of time to get them. If you would like to fish Green Wrasse, you have to catch crabs under Kelong. If you
would like to fish Spotted Grouper, you need to use living prawns. Furthermore, you have to use quality fish
line so that it will not cut off by shells which lived on Nibong woods. Now, Green Wrass weight record is 3.2kg,
Green Grouper is 3.6kg and Leopard coralgrouperis 1.8kg. The rest are Tiera Batfish , Sweetlip (Kaci) ,
stingray , Shovelnosa Ray , Groupers , Red Snapper , Snapper , Trigger Fish , Big Eye Trevally
which can not be seen frequently. But if you have mastered the tide, bait and fishing skills, you still have to
chance to get fish. Do you know how to preserve Harengula Zunasi Bleeker(Tamban) and squids? Many
people always put those baits into an icebox most of the time. At last, the ice melted and those baits were
soaked at the water until deteriorate. No fish will like to eat it. The vitality of Harengula Zunasi Bleeker(Tamban)
is very weak. After fished not longer than 30 seconds, it will turn into shock condition. So, you have to remove
the hook quickly and hook it at its fin and put it back into the water. If it has died, you just put it into water which
has added ice to keep it fresh as just fished. For squids, you just need to wrap it by newspaper and put it into a
plastic bag. Then, just freeze it by not contact with water. By this, the squids will still in fresh condition even store
until night. For large squids, you can cut it into V shape after freezing. It looks unnatural in the water with the stiff
flesh. I have an idea. Before use it, you can smash it on the floor for few times. Anyway, fin of the squid should be
removed. Fishes hate it. Another important thing, you have to prevent from using some improper fishing tactics
which will give trouble to you and others. For example, using floating balloons, floating signs and exile dead or
living baits in the water.
Fishing knowledge is something that can not short of. Quantity of fishes you get depends on your fishing
knowledge. No one will like to bring nothing back after a whole day work at the sea. You have to use living
prawns to fish at this area as it is the best choice. I recommend you to use living prawns because it is fresh
than the dead prawns. Instead of dead prawns, most of the fish will like to have fresh prawns as their food.
Besides, I also discovered that most people will place the hook at the tail of a prawn to ensure that the prawn
will not die. However, the fish will not get hooked when it eats the prawn. You suppose to hook at the body of
the prawn so that the fish will get hooked when it eats the prawn.
At night, you have to use squids as bait. Most of the fish which come at night would like to eat squid very
much. Even though there are squids supplied by Kelong for free, but unsure they are fresh. So, before depart
to the sea, it is better that you fish some sotong or you also can buy some squids if there is any fishing boat
near Kelong. It is very easy to cut it. First, remove the head of the squid. Then, cut open the body, remove the
cartilage and cut from the centre into two parts. Remember to cut it by follow the body length. If the squid is 6m
long, you can cut it into 3 pieces in V shape and hook it at the edge of the V in and out. After that, you can put it
into the water to induce fishes t eat it. I have told you quite a lot of secrets of fishing. You should have a try now.
Before we dismiss, I would like to tell you some prohibitions at Kelong. 1) As we are worshipping “Dato”
at Kelong, therefore, pork is not allowed to bring to kelong. 2) Before go out to the sea, do not mention any kind
of fish that you would like to get. 3) Do not break the ice in the midnight as it disturbs others to rest. Learn to
respect others and others will respect you too.
